In Abernant
we recognise that children learn in different ways, we follow a programme of Accelerated
Learning, which facilitates varied approaches to teaching. We have invested in many
resources in school, which help children learn more effectively; interactive displays,
computers and to prevent dehydration, chilled water, freely available during the day, to
name a few.
Right from
the start the children are taught knowledge and skills, which encompass, through a
programme of Quality Living and Learning, spiritual, social, aesthetic, physical,
linguistic, mathematical, scientific and technological concepts.
However for
all children to learn effectively we also emphasise the importance of self-discipline. We
encourage good behaviour, tolerance of our peers, courtesy and consideration for others
and the school environment as well as the wider community. These qualities are promoted
through an assertive discipline programme, which enables every class to develop their own
set of strict rules, accompanied by rewards and consequences, this programme is followed
throughout the two key stages.
Children are
taught in mixed age classes, either in groups or individually, appropriate to the planned
lesson. All planned work is differentiated for the individual needs of the child. Lessons
are both challenging and supportive to the individual and each lesson will have specific
success criteria by which assessments can be made.
We teach
Mathematics and English in the morning and Science and the Foundation subjects in the
afternoon, language work is promoted in every subject, communication skills are seen as a
fundamental requirement for every subject.
Physical
Education is taught on the same day each week, children are encouraged to be suitably
attired for the subject, shorts, t.shirt/ leotard and plimsolls, trainers are only
suitable for outdoor games and athletics.
During 2005
we hope to achieve Dyslexic Friendly Schools Status.
We are holders of the Basic
Skills Quality Mark and Investors in People Status.
