The National Curriculum

The school offers a broad balanced curriculum in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum, a curriculum laid down by the government and is taught in all State schools in England and Wales.

The National Curriculum applies to all children of statutory school age, which is from the term after a child’s fifth birthday until the child is sixteen.

The ‘Core’ subjects of Mathematics, English and Science will take up the majority of your child’s timetable.

The ‘Foundation’ subjects are History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art, P.E. Welsh and ICT. (Welsh is a core subject in Welsh medium schools.)

Religious Education is compulsory for all pupils. A Christian based assembly is held every morning. We study the Christian and Jewish faiths in the Infant Department, we also study the Islamic faith in the Junior Department.

Pupils may be excluded from assembly on the grounds of religious belief.

When we refer to the word ‘curriculum’ we are referring to everything a child learns in school. It is the whole learning experience offered to your child. The curriculum is not only the lessons and after school activities, but also the ethos of the school, the standards, discipline and attitudes of the staff, children and parents. In many ways the ‘hidden curriculum’ will have a greater influence than the timetabled lessons.
