Slave trade
The slave trade began in the 16th century after the discovery of America. The sugar plantations of America needed lots of labour and there were plentiful supplies of it in Africa.  The merchants of Bristol , London and Liverpool wanted to take advantage of this money spinner and began to get slaves from Africa in exchange for manufactured goods made in Britain. Slavery was nothing new it had a long history but the scale of the trade was greater than it had for many years.
