Welsh Schools Senior Group Under 18 Cup
The
First Game in Campaign. 22nd November 2000
Cardinal Newman senior XV started their Welsh Secondary Schools cup campaign with a convincing win 43 : 3 win over Cynffig Comprehensive School.
Emmett Mcloughlin set the scene with a crunching tackle from the kick off, this led to driving maul which progressed to Gareth Lewis pushing his way to score. Thomas Nash disected the post with the conversion to put Newman ahead by 7 : 0 with only a minute on the clock.
It wasn't long before that man McGloughlin was in the thick of thing again, he picked and scored after driving centre Ciaran Phillips was brought down short of the line. Nash converted.
With the side firing on all cylinders it was dynamic scrum half Nicky Lancaster who dived over to score the teams third try after some effective linking movements. Nash again converted to put the Newman ahead by 21 : 0.
The strong running centre Phillips was next to break the defensive line after a powerful run straight through the heart of the Cynffig defense, this was converted by Nash. Further unconverted tries from Lewis and Phillips put Newman ahead by 38 : 0 at half time.
After the thorough first half destruction of the Cynffig team, it was the Bridgend team who started the scoring in the second half with a well executed penalty.
With the home team coasting it was back row man Mathew Wilson playing out of position at prop who breached the Cynffig line for Newman's seventh and final try of the day. At the final whistle Newman secured a convincing 43 : 3 win.
