Green Flag Report

On 21st May we gained the Green Flag. This is a great achievement for Tonyrefail School and the local community. The Green Flag is a prestigious award that is recognised throughout the world. The assessors said they were overwhelmed by the amount of hard work accomplished by the pupils and staff of our school. They were impressed with the fact that we work so well together to create a clean and welcoming environment.

We have to give special thanks to the Re-cycling Team who have persevered throughout the year, collecting heavy re-cycling bags from every classroom in the school, twice weekly. Staff have helped by ensuring their re-cycling bags stay contamination free. Here we must mention the ECO Officers in every form who keep an eye on their form teachers and make sure they remember to swith off unneccessary lights and reduce waste.

Mrs. Rafferty was overjoyed with the news.  She was determined to achieve this honour for Tonyrefail before she finished her teaching career and she has succeeded. For the last six years she has worked with pupils on different projects which have all contributed towards our application for the Green Flag. A number of staff and pupils from the ECO Committee and the Re-cycling Team as well as members of the School Council and the Crime Prevention Team and the Year 7 ECO Club have worked collaboratively to raise awareness of environment issues in school.

These different groups between them have kept the school free of litter, raised awareness for the need to re-cycle and reduce waste and save energy. They have also contributed to staff briefings by appealing for staff support in the fight to keep Tonyrefail a clean, litter free school where we can all be proud to work.

This award is the culmination of a tremendous amount of work by the pupils and staff of Tonyrefail school and we can be proud to be part of this community. We must now ensure that we continue to work together to keep Tonyrefail School a clean, green zone.
